La Bottine Souriante represents a significant contribution to the preservation and continuation of Québecois musical heritage, a unique mélange and evolution of folk music originating from France, England, Ireland and Scotland, imbued over time with a color and rhythm particular to various regions of Québec. The group symbolizes the vitality and pride of its mother culture, at the same time identifying strongly with the current World Beat movement-the adaptation of musical roots in response to a more modern world. While remaining true to its roots, La Bottine is far from static. The group has developed a distinctive sound all its own that successfully allies it homage to tradition with a dash of jazz, salsa and pure folk, to the delight of its equally diverse audiences.
La Bottine Souriante first appeared on the Québec music scene in 1976 and over the course of the next 25 years (and eleven albums), the no-holds-barred energy and singular quality of this remarkable group have created an immensely loyal following. Today, La Bottine Souriante continues to impress audiences with its unbeatable musicianship and an intense, dynamic stage presence that has given the group a special place in the hearts of fans. In their native Québec, they are revered as major pop stars with a busy touring calendar of up to 80 shows annually, complete with music videos and sold-out stadium shows. Elsewhere, they are the darlings of the folk and world music scenes, having played many of the world's major festivals.
The band's show is certain to go down in history as one of the most energized audio "cocktails" ever concocted, an explosive sound that lovingly blends together and exuberantly pours out its tasty potpourri of songs and instrumentals.
The band has won numerous awards including the 2002 Juno (Canadian Academy of recording Arts & Sciences) for Best Roots and Traditional Album; the 2000 winner of the BBC Fold Award for the Best Live Act in the UK; and the 1999 Felix Award for the best folk album of the year.
